Shimla - An Overview

Shimla is probably the first name that would come up in any conversation of an extended weekend from Delhi NCR. This enchanting hill station has captivated the hearts of travelers for centuries with its breathtaking vistas and pleasant climate. Situated at an altitude of 2,205 meters above sea level, Shimla experiences a cool and pleasant climate throughout the year. The city is surrounded by dense forests of pine, oak, and rhododendron trees that add to its natural beauty.

Shimla's rich history dates back to the British colonial era when it served as the summer capital of India. Under British rule, Shimla witnessed rapid development with grand buildings, churches, and schools being constructed. The town's colonial architecture, including the iconic Viceregal Lodge and Christ Church, stands as a testament to its glorious past.

One of the key figures in Shimla's transformation was Lord Charles Napier, who played a pivotal role in shaping the city's development. Under his administration as the Commander-in-Chief of the British Indian Army in the mid-19th century, Shimla saw significant improvements in its infrastructure and administration. The construction of the iconic Shimla-Kalka railway line, known as the "toy train," was one of his notable contributions.

Another important figure in Shimla's history is Lord Edward Dufferin, who served as the Viceroy of India in the late 19th century. Dufferin recognized the potential of Shimla as a summer retreat and

initiated several development projects. He encouraged the construction of grand colonial buildings, such as the Viceregal Lodge (now Rashtrapati Niwas) and the Gaiety Theatre, which still stand as prominent landmarks.

Navigating to and within Shimla

There are several ways to reach Shimla from Gurgaon, each offering its own unique experience. The most convenient option (arguably for this short of a distance) is to travel by air. There are several connections from Delhi to Chandigarh. Some of these also take you on ATR flights which are a fun way to experience. These aircraft serve short distances and fly at lower heights and hence are prone to more turbulence. From Chandigarh, you can take a connecting flight to Jubbarhatti Airport near Shimla. This option is ideal for those who value time and comfort.

Another popular mode of transportation is by train. One can board a train from Gurgaon Railway Station (or one of the other stations in Delhi) and travel to Kalka Railway Station (or Chandigarh is pretty close too), which serves as the gateway to Shimla. From Kalka, one can opt for the historic toy train that chugs its way up to Shimla amidst breathtaking scenery.

The journey is as beautiful

Taradevi Temple enroute is an Amazing Stopover

For those who enjoy road trips (and that includes us) and wish to soak in the beauty of nature along the way, traveling by road is an excellent choice. The distance between Gurgaon and Shimla is approximately 350 kilometers and can be covered in around 7-8 hours by car or bus. If you prefer an economic mode, there are enough bus services between the two cities and these cater to a variety of budgets. If you prefer a bit of privacy, driving is fun too on this route as roads are great and there are a lot of things you could consider covering en route.

Within Shimla, you have multiple options to commute. There are taxis available for hire which offer various tours and pick you up from your hotels. Also, there are point-to-point taxis available at most tourist spots. If you prefer, Uber is available in Shimla and pretty efficient in operations.

Having fun on the way is a pre-requisite to a great trip

Places to Stay in Shimla

Shimla has a variety of accommodation options for all budgets and choices. If you are looking for economical options, there are several hostels and budget hotels. If you have the luxury to spend, there is no dearth of luxury hotels and resorts. Where you choose your accommodation depends on your taste and the purpose of the visit. If you are visiting for unwinding and prefer avoiding touristy hustle, then it would be better to opt for a resort on the outskirts of the town. Most chains have resorts in Shimla and it isn't difficult to find the one matching your budgets.

On the other hand, if you prefer to stay close to all the touristy activities. and enjoy the hustle, it is better to choose one of the hotels on Mall Road. There are many options available there but the only thing to keep in mind is that vehicles aren't allowed on Mall Road so you may have to tug your luggage for some distance. Sometimes, hotels you are headed to offer porter service, so you may want to call ahead. If you are looking at Mall Road, we would recommend considering Hotel Shingaar and Summit Le Royale.

From quaint cafes to fine dining restaurants, Shimla has a plethora of options for food enthusiasts. There is a unique Himachali Cuisine that has its own flavors. There are several luxury restaurants including the Oberoi Cecil that offers a fine dining experience with a breathtaking view of the mountains. However, we would recommend looking for options at the Mall Road. There are umpteen cafes and restaurants which have been artistically decorated. One of such is the Shimla Cafe which is a great setting to end the day. The place offers the best views and great food. For those looking for a relaxing family meal from North India, there is a restaurant called EIGHTEEN71 on the mall road. While all of this is there, the true fun is enjoying the street food while strolling around in the city - the variety is amazing from matar-kulcha to siddu.

The Mall Road of Shimla is an ecosystem in itself. Like any other hill station in India, Mall Road is the center of tourist interest in Shimla. While the road in itself is busy with hustle and activities, there are several tourist sites located within the realm of the road. Some of the experiences on the Mall Road include the following.

Sites on the Day Tour of Shimla

If you are in Shimla, there are a few things that would be recommended on any day tour (or even a half-day tour). This section deals with two of the most important ones.

The Viceroy Lodge or Institute of Advanced Museum

Majestic Viceroy Lodge in Backdrop
Viceroy Lodge Shimla, also known as Rashtrapati Niwas, is a majestic architectural marvel located in the picturesque hill station of Shimla, India. Built in the Jacobethan style of architecture, this historic building served as the summer residence of the Viceroy of India during the British Raj. The Viceroy Lodge Shimla holds immense historical significance as it was witness to many important political decisions and discussions that shaped the course of Indian history. It was here that Lord Mountbatten drew up plans for India's partition in 1947. The building was later converted to the Institute of Advanced Studies where research scholars self-study on topics of history.

Guided tours are conducted during most days which allow visitors to explore its opulent interiors, lush gardens, and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The approximately 30-minute tours happen every hour and are pretty narrative to provide an overview of the building and its history. The building still boasts of concealed electrical, fire fighting systems, furniture & furnishings, and clocks which are from the time of the British era and still operational. Any visit to Shimla isn't complete without visiting this monument.

The Army Museum

The Army Museum in Shimla is a treasure trove of history and heritage, showcasing the valiant efforts and sacrifices of the Indian Army throughout the years. Located in the picturesque hill station of Shimla, this museum offers a glimpse into the rich military history of India.

Additional Thoughts

  • LIFT in Shimla - The authorities have set up a LIFT to take tourists and locals to Mall Road quickly. They are very effective and have decent capacity. However, stay prepared for queues during the busy season.
  • Accommodation on Mall Road - Mall Road has a prohibition of vehicular traffic and hence if you have a hotel on Mall Road, your vehicle would leave you quite a distance away from the hotel. It is advisable to call the hotel in advance and make preparations for escorting to the hotel
  • Lack of Activities - In the suburbs of Shimla there are many towns touted by the tourist operators that are worth visiting over day tours. However, most of these places have the hill charm but do not have specific activities to engage you.
  • Toy train - This is one experience that everyone should aim to cover. While the road distance is only for two and a half hours. the train takes five hours for the tourist trains and seven hours for the normal trains. It is advisable to only take that journey either on your way up or your way down but not both.
  • Negotiations - Shimla is a typical touristy town and hence it would do you good to try and negotiate prices. This is especially true for gift shopping and cab/taxi hiring. While it may be difficult if you are there in peak season (snowfall yesterday or today) but otherwise there are enough buffers to bring prices down.

Bidding Good Byes

Shimla is a great destination for tourists. Compared to some of its contemporaries, it is much more prepared to handle the rush. However, the booming tourism industry also had its drawbacks. The unplanned construction and unregulated growth led to environmental degradation and congestion in the city. The increasing number of vehicles and waste generation posed significant challenges to the local administration. The need for sustainable tourism practices and better infrastructure became evident.

Hope you liked the article and it contributed to your interest in this town. Please let us know your feedback in the comments. Leaving you with some additional pictures from Shimla.
